How do I get to the Maes of the Urdd Eisteddfod?

The 2019 Urdd Eisteddfod will be held in Cardiff Bay with the Maes situated around the Roald Dahl Plass which includes Wales Millennium Centre and the Senedd. The post code for the site is CF10 5AL

 

Many people are already familiar with travelling to the city using trains, buses and a network of roads, with the M4, A470, and the A48 (M) being the main routes into Cardiff.

 

Travelling from the City Centre to Cardiff Bay

Please note that the Urdd will not be have specific car parking facilities at this year’s Eisteddfod, therefore we encourage our visitors to use public transport and to share cars whenever possible.

There are more ways of reaching the Eisteddfod Maes this year than ever before.

 

Bicycle

Bicycles are available for hire through the Nextbike scheme with a site to collect or return bicycles on the Eisteddfod Maes. Further details on how the scheme works and prices are available on their website:

Train

Transport for Wales trains run every 12 minutes between Queen Street Station and Cardiff Bay station, which is within easy walking distance from the Eisteddfod Maes. The first train leaves Queen’s Street Station at 06:36 a.m. and the last train leaves Cardiff Bay at 23:54 p.m. All timetables can be found on the Transport for Wales website: https://tfwrail.wales/homepage or on the App.

Bus

Cardiff Bus provide a number of services from the City to Cardiff Bay including:

6 – Cardiff Bay, Central Station, Queen’s Street Station, Cathays Park (about every 10 minutes)

8 – Cardiff Bay, Dumfries Place, Crwys Street, Heath Hospital

Boat/Water Bus

The Cardiff Boat company travel regularly from the city centre to the bay and back, starting from Bute Park next to Pettigrew Tea Shop (CF10 1BJ) and ending the route by the Eisteddfod Maes in the Bay. AquaBus company also travel regularly from the city centre to the bay and back, starting from the Castle Gardens and ending the route by the Eisteddfod Maes in the bay. How do I buy Wrist Bands for the National Urdd Eisteddfod?

Entry to the Urdd National Eisteddfod 'Maes' is free in 2019.

For entry to the Pavilion (Donald Gordon Theatre) or the competition prelims, you will need to buy a Wrist Band.

All competitors and children can enter all of the Eisteddfod's competing areas free of charge.

Do I need a separate ticket to enter the Maes during the day and the concerts or competitions in the evening?

Day entry to the Urdd Eisteddfod is free of change and you can gain entry to the Maes from 7am. 

All competitors and children can enter all of the Eisteddfod's competing areas free of charge.

Evening competitions are held on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Donald Gordon Theatre.

A day entry Wrist Band for that particular day will also allow you access to the evening competitions (depending on whether there are spare seats in the theatre). Please click here to buy your daily Wrist band or contact Wales Millennium Centre directly on 029 2063 6464.

What's on during the evenings?

Shows will be performed on specific evenings during the week of the National Eisteddfod. 

If you are interested in attending one of these events, you will need to buy a different ticket to the daily Wrist Band which allows you to enter the Eisteddfod competition locations.

Are all the prelims held on the Maes?

Some of the prelims will be held in the Wales Millennium Centre (on the Maes), others in the Odeon Cinemas at the Red Dragon Centre (outside the boundaries of the Maes), in the Choral Hall located at Britannia Park (outside the Maes) and in the Dance Hall at Mount Stuart School (also outside the Maes).

 

What facilities are available on the Maes for people with disabilities?

All our temporary structures around the Maes are accessible by wheelchair. 

The permanent building on the Maes are also accessible by wheelchair with a lift to the higher levels of the Wales Millennium Centre.

I need to bring heavy equipment onto the Maes such as a harp or other instruments. Is there any help available on arrival?

Yes. When arriving to an entry point to the Maes, please notify a steward wearing an orange jacket, who will radio for assistance. Otherwise ask a staff member at the information desk in the Wales Millennium Centre. 

 

Do you have a Caravan or Campsite at the Urdd Eisteddfod?

Unfortunately, there isn't a caravan or camp site at this year's National Urdd Eisteddfod.

Are dogs allowed onto the Eisteddfod Maes?

No, only Guide Dogs are allowed on the Maes.

Do you allow smoking on the Eisteddfod Maes?

Smoking is prohibited on the Eisteddfod Maes – both inside and outside. E-cigarettes are also prohibited. 

Where can I get translation equipment for hire?

Translation headpieces can be located at the enquiries desk on the ground floor of the Wales Millennium Centre.
