A chat with Gwenllian Jenkins

(LEVEL 2, outdoor activities) APPRENTICE OF THE MONTH May 2020

Gwenllian comes from Llanwnnen, Ceredigion and attended Ysgol Bro Pedr in Lampeter, before deciding to apply to do an apprenticeship with the Urdd at Llangrannog residential centre.

Why did you choose to apply for an apprenticeship with the Urdd?

I saw the apprenticeship as an opportunity to work outdoors whilst developing skills and getting a range of useful training.

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?

This is difficult because I feel like I get so much from doing the apprenticeship. I have to say what I enjoy the most is seeing children who really enjoy doing new activities, maybe they'll never have the chance to do it again. It's a comforting thought to think that the staff at Llangrannog are part of children's perhaps unforgettable experiences. ('Honorable mention' goes into the magnificent landscape!)

How important is it to do your apprenticeship through the medium of Welsh?

I feel very lucky to be working in an environment that promotes the Welsh language like the Urdd does. Running sessions through the medium of Welsh, not only gives participants the opportunity to use their language, but also makes me feel more comfortable.

What are your interests outside of work?

At the moment, I love to keep active at home in whatever way is convenient! Often, I'm skipping, boxing, weightlifting or dancing!

How has doing the apprenticeship affected your personal development?

I didn't expect my numeracy and literacy skills to develop as much as they have during the apprenticeship. I attribute my improvement in these areas due to the WEST tasks I complete. Confidence in talking in front of people is another skill I was hopeful to improve before starting and I feel like that has happened.

Briefly describe your duties.

The apprenticeship involves practical work such as carrying out maintenance tasks, preparing activities and running a variety of activities for groups visiting the centre. In addition, I complete written and practical work-related tasks, to ensure that I receive the main qualification by the end of the year.

What are you hoping to do after completing the apprenticeship?

I'd like to continue working in the outdoors; I haven't decided on a definite route.

Describe your experience of doing an apprenticeship with the Urdd in 3 words!

Pleasant. Challenging. Valuable.
