GLAN-LLYN ISA’ RESIDENTIAL COURSES

During the 22/23 school term, with support from the Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board, the Urdd's Outdoor Service led 6 Residential courses across each County for young people in Glan-llyn Isa' in order to promote Mental Health in the Outdoors . Following the success of these courses, the intention is to offer more dates during Winter and Spring 2023/24.

All the courses are based around the theme of Health and Wellbeing, using elements of the Health Board's 5 Steps to Mental Wellbeing and weaving the benefits of the outdoors into our courses.

The Programme

The young people will arrive after school, where there will be time to get an introduction to the three days, receive input on the programme, have a meal and an activity before relaxing in the new accommodation.

The second day will focus on outdoor activities. Our officers will discuss the most suitable activity with leaders before the course, taking into account ages, ability and time of year. The activities vary from walks in the forest, mountain trips, climbing, water activities or bushcraft, with the level of "adventure" tailored to each group specifically.

We will spend the second night reviewing the day and experiences so far, with an additional focus on the benefits of the outdoors and the natural world on our mental health. Activities such as Yoga, Mindfulness and Pilates are also very popular during this period, before closing the night with Pizza cooked with fire!

The last activity will take place after breakfast on the last day, before reviewing, sharing experiences, and closing the course and saying goodbye after lunch, returning to school by the last bell.
