A Chat with Llio Roberts, Apprentice of the Month, April 2021

Llio Roberts is from Llandrillo near Bala. She went to Llandrillo Primary School and to Berwyn High School. She then went to sixth form at Ysgol Dinas Bran. She is in her second year studying a level 3 apprenticeship in the Outdoor Activities sector at Glan-llyn. Here’s a little about her story…

Why did you decide to take on an apprenticeship with the Urdd?

When I was in sixth form, I had the opportunity to be on the Urdd forum and organized gigs in school, so I already had experience of volunteering for the organization. I wanted to gain experience in the Outdoor Activities sector, and the idea of working whilst gaining qualifications was very appealing.

What do you enjoy most about the apprenticeship?

I enjoy being able to work through the medium of Welsh and working with a variety of participants and colleagues with different experiences. I also enjoy being able to work with different people from different fields within the Urdd.

What do you think about undertaking an apprenticeship through the medium of Welsh?

Welsh is my first language, I am confident and comfortable working and leading sessions through the language, so having a job where I can use the language is great.

What are your interests outside of work?

I enjoy keeping fit and healthy by doing many different activities including climbing, mountaineering and team sports such as football and netball. I also like watching 'Friends' on Netflix!

How has doing the apprenticeship affected your personal development?

I feel I have developed my confidence and my teamwork skills, as we work very closely as a team at Glan-llyn. I have also had the opportunity to gain globally recognized qualifications.

What are you hoping to do after completing the apprenticeship?

I hope to be able to work at Glan-llyn as an instructor and then eventually go back to university although I'm not sure what I want to study yet!

Briefly describe your duties.

A lot has changed in my role due to COVID-19, including keeping the site for everyone. As the restrictions are easing, we are starting to lead more sessions at schools and activities at Glan-llyn.

Describe your experience of doing an apprenticeship with the Urdd in 3 words!

An experience, unforgettable, Fun!
