Faye Brightman comes from Cardigan in West Wales, and she has recently completed her Level 3 Youth Work qualification. Faye offers safe spaces to young people within the LGBTQ+ communities of Ceredigion and North Pembrokeshire.

Which school did you attend?

I was home educated until the age of 15, when I started College. I completed a Vocational Access course (previously known as Independent Living Skills) at Coleg Ceredigion in Aberystwyth, which took me from being Entry Level 1 in English and Maths to Level 1.

Why did you decide to take on a Youth Work apprenticeship with the Urdd?

I enrolled on the course initially as part of a previous job, and after leaving that role, decided to continue to develop my skills working with young people, so I could become a more effective youth worker.

What do you enjoy most about your job and how does the apprenticeship effect your job?

I really enjoy making a difference to the lives of young people and seeing that difference, as well as enjoying making others happy. This apprenticeship has made me better at my job and become more competent when supporting the young people I work with.

How has completing the apprenticeship developed your Welsh skills?

My tutor has really helped me to develop my Welsh skills, by starting each of our meetings in Welsh, and encouraging me to use simple Welsh words and phrases when working with young people. This has also helped to improve my confidence. Diolch yn fawr Nia!

What are your interests outside the workplace?

I really enjoy singing, dancing and acting! I’ve got a background in drama, and I find it’s a really great way to de-stress and improve my mood!

In which way has completing an apprenticeship effected your personal development?

It's helped me to look at things in different ways, and to challenge myself when I am holding myself back.

What do you hope to do after completing your apprenticeship?

I hope to continue supporting young people, and to continue learning and developing my youth work practice.

Describe your responsibilities.

I coordinate Glow Byd Bach, an LGBTQ+ safe space, inspiring and helping young people based in West Wales.

Describe your experience of completing the apprenticeship with the Urdd in three words!

Exhilarating, beneficial, gwych!
