A chat with Morgan Harvey

APPRENTICE OF THE MONTH - NOVEMBER 2019

Morgan was born and raised in Rumney, Cardiff. After finishing at Glantaf School, she was unsure if she wanted to go to University as she didn't know which subject to study. After considering her options, she decided to apply for a sports apprenticeship with the Urdd and Morgan is now in her second year completing a 'Sports Development' apprenticeship.

Why did you choose to apply for an apprenticeship with the Urdd?

I thought it was a great opportunity to start my journey as a sports coach! The Urdd offers many different opportunities and qualifications that develop individuals to become the best coach you can be. Also having a salary for all of this was a big advantage.

Has sport been a big part of your life?

Since I was little, I was very interested in sport. I've been swimming competitively for Cardiff for 10 years and have seen huge benefits in doing this. I want to help other people see the benefits of sport too. It's fun, keeps you healthy and is a great way to make new friends!

What are your interests outside of work?

I am interested in photography and arts and crafts, and enjoy spending my spare time on this. I also like spending time with friends and family.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Working with children and seeing their skills and confidence increase. It makes me feel like I'm making a difference to the sports community and giving something back to every coach who helped me on my sporting journey.

How important is it to do your apprenticeship through the medium of Welsh?

It's very important to me - it opens doors for the future, and is an opportunity for me to improve my Welsh. Being able to provide a Welsh language sports service to the children of Cardiff is also very important and valuable to me and the language!

How has doing the apprenticeship affected your personal development?

I have developed more self confidence and self belief. I feel much more comfortable coaching children and talking to parents. I also feel much more creative in teaching and training the children, and have learned how to organize myself and how to work within a team effectively. The Urdd has given me amazing experiences. I've gained qualifications, expanded my sporting knowledge and gained a lot of confidence to succeed.
