Katy Campbell is our apprentice of the month for November. Katy is a Level 3 Childcare apprentice, working at the Rocking Horse Nursery in Flintshire, and has been nominated for using different learning approaches and reflecting on her own practice. Katy isn’t originally from Wales and has been attending a Welsh language course with the Urdd to help develop her skills, and she is using Welsh naturally with the children. Katy has answered some questions about her apprenticeship journey so far:-
Where are you from?
I’m from Hereford originally, but I grew up as an army child, so I’m from everywhere really! I lived in Yorkshire most of my life, before moving to North Wales four years ago.
Where did you go to school?
Everywhere! As an army child, I attended four primary schools and two secondary schools. I started off in Hereford, then attended a school in Brunei, and then another two schools in Yorkshire. I began secondary school in Northern Ireland, before returning to a school in East Yorkshire.
Why did you start your apprenticeship with the Urdd?
I’ve worked in childcare most of my adult life, apart from during Covid when I worked in adult care, and used my degree in Educational Studies to help with my work. When I started working in Wales, I was offered the opportunity to work towards a Level 3 Childcare qualification, and I jumped at the chance!
What do you enjoy most about your job and how has the apprenticeship affected your work?
I've always loved working with children, but this apprenticeship has really helped me to recognise and understand early education in Wales. I have also discovered new interests, for instance after research, I am now absolutely fascinated by the experience of bilingual children and how to support them.
What does completing your apprenticeship in Welsh/bilingually mean to you?
I only moved to Wales four years ago, but I have such a love for the Welsh language. I am strongly considering sending my son to a Welsh medium school, because of the huge benefits involved with learning a second language. I have completed courses and workshops in Welsh, and I love learning new vocabulary and using it at work. I always enjoyed learning French at school, but it’s been lovely learning a language that I can use in practical ways.
What are your interests outside work?
I live with my fiancé and our two year old mischief of a son, with my stepson also spending time with us as well. We all love spending time together, listening to and making music, as well as going to the zoo. I am very involved with my local church, and help with the children’s groups and events there.
In what way has your apprenticeship contributed to your personal development?
It has built my confidence. Returning to work after having a baby is hard, especially when you’re second guessing yourself as you develop a new role in your personal life, so having the support and encouragement of my tutor has been amazing.
What do you hope to do after completing your apprenticeship?
To continue working in childcare and developing my skills and knowledge. I hope to keep learning more Welsh, as well as building my confidence in Welsh further.
Describe your duties.
I work in our Early Education room with children who are three years old. I support their learning and development and work closely with a team to do so. We work closely with an Early Education teacher, who comes in often to monitor our work and to support us with what we do.
Describe your experience in 3 words.
Rewarding, encouraging and fun.
Would you like to add anything to your story?
I am very grateful to Rebecca for all the encouragement she has given me.
