Rubelyn is originally from the Philippines and now lives in Swansea. She works at Plasmarl Primary School in the city and is working towards a Level 2 Childcare qualification. Here’s what she had to say about working towards her apprenticeship with the Urdd.
Why did you start your apprenticeship with the Urdd?
I always wanted to study childcare and to improve my Welsh language skills, but hadn’t found the right opportunity. A friend, who is also an apprentice with the Urdd, encouraged me to join the apprenticeship programme. When I heard about it, I was excited to have the opportunity to study childcare bilingually, as it’s the opportunity I’d been looking for. The Urdd’s staff have been supportive from the very beginning and throughout my apprenticeship.
What do you enjoy most about your job and how has the apprenticeship affected your work?
I love working with my colleagues and the families of the children, in supporting their development and learning journey. I also enjoy making learning fun and creative for the children. As an Urdd apprentice, it has not only helped me to build my confidence, but I’ve also developed a deeper understanding of my duties and responsibilities at work.
What does completing your apprenticeship in Welsh/bilingually mean to you?
Having the opportunity to study bilingually has given me the chance to improve my Welsh and to use it at work every day.
What are your interests outside work?
I am passionate about acting and cosplay, and I work as a supporting artist in film and television, as well as attending conventions. I also have a keen interest in learning different languages. During my spare time, I enjoy playing computer games, watching anime and reading books.
In what way has your apprenticeship contributed to your personal development?
I have gained confidence both using and teaching Welsh at work. I have also developed new skills about how to effectively support the children’s learning and development.
What do you hope to do after your apprenticeship?
I aim to continue growing professionally, whilst supporting the learning and development of children.
Describe your duties.
I provide general support to the teacher and we work as a team to ensure the smooth running of the class, as well as to create a safe and welcoming environment for the children. I also ensure the safety and well-being of the children, while fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.
Describe your experiencein 3 words.
Supportive, inspiring and rewarding.
Would you like to add anything to your story?
I’m very grateful to my assessor Sonia and my colleagues at work, for supporting me throughout my learning. They’re incredibly helpful and encouraging, and I couldn’t have done it without their support. I’d also like to thank the Urdd for giving me the opportunity to learn and grow professionally.
